Interested in exploring the dynamics of successful MSPs, particularly in terms of culture and talent attraction, I got the chance to talk with Sal Marino at Charles IT. Charles IT stands as a recipient of numerous prestigious awards in the MSP space and the broader business realm, including the INC5000, Channel Futures MSP 501, and recognition as one of the best places to work in the Hartford Business Journal. Additionally, Sal's commendable contributions ad Director of Finance and Operations have earned him a spot in the Hartford Business Journal's 40 Under 40.
After gaining his MBA and unsatisfied working for that state of Connecticut. Sal found himself drawn to Charles IT's amazing culture he observed from their online presence. Choosing growth over stagnation, he joined the company when it boasted 17 employees and $4 million in revenue. Taking on various roles spanning HR, finance, sales, marketing, and backend functions, Sal played an impactful role in propelling Charles IT to its current standing of $24 million in revenue and with a team of 110 employees in his past six years.
Fostering a Distinctive Workplace Culture
Charles IT distinguishes itself not only in the MSP landscape but also in its commitment to a vibrant workplace culture helping it stand out as one of the best places to work in Connecticut. Being fully in-person contributes to this as the company values the spontaneity and cohesion that physical presence fosters. As Sal notes: “It's much harder to be spontaneous and just start making drinks after work. When you're remote, interactions like these are more orchestrated.”
Though Charles IT is celebrating employee milestones and events on platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook, the portrayal of Charles IT's internal dynamics goes beyond the glossy social media facade providing a genuine glimpse into the company's day-to-day operations. The company offers unique perks like having dogs in the office, covering dry cleaning expenses, providing lunch every Friday, and organizing quarterly outings. An exceptional highlight is the "epic outings," where the entire team embarks on a surprise three-day adventure, fostering camaraderie and shared experiences.
Structured Growth and Holistic Employee Well-being
A recent addition is a comprehensive career progression plan for every role within the company at Charles IT. Sal highlighted that this structured approach ensures that employees have a clear path for advancement. Beyond career development, the company places a strong emphasis on employee well-being. In addition to fitness reimbursements and challenges, they've integrated mental health services into their medical and disability offerings. Sal emphasized the importance of not just focusing on career progression but also personal development.
Charles IT conducts monthly sessions on topics like budgeting, 401k, wills and trusts, and even personal fitness, showcasing a commitment to the holistic growth of its employees.
Continuing Growth
Integral to Charles IT's success in assembling a high-caliber team is the GWC principle: Get it, Want it, and Capacity for it.
Sal emphasizes the significance of this approach, sharing how it shapes their hiring process to ensure they bring the right people into the organization. This holistic framework goes beyond technical focus and into cultural alignment and an individual's potential for growth.
“...if they don't have the technical background, but they have the capacity for it and they want it, there is a high likelihood that we can bring them on, give them a path and they’ll go get it. I think that really separates us from most other organizations”
On the hiring front, Charles IT believes that by finding individuals who possess the right mindset and a genuine desire to contribute, they can instill the necessary skills and knowledge. This philosophy sets Charles IT apart, allowing them to not only build a proficient team but also nurture a culture of continuous learning and adaptability, a characteristic that distinguishes them within the industry.
Community Engagement: Going Beyond Corporate Boundaries
Charles IT's commitment to community impact extends beyond business transactions. Sal highlights the company's sponsorship and donation initiatives, supporting events and charities aligned with their major verticals, such as nonprofits. One example that made me smile was their event with a local dog rescue where they covered half the adoption fee providing every pup going to a new home with a Charles IT collar and bandana.
Sponsoring events like these can also be great for the team and clients as they can bring them along to fun events that contribute to charity, like clay shooting. It's a fun time for everyone, helps the business and helps charity.
Looking ahead in 2024, Charles IT plans to create its flagship charity event, further solidifying its commitment to making a positive impact beyond corporate borders.
The Personal Touch
Sal's dedication to his work is very personal. For example, beyond the professional realm, he integrates his past experiences, having coached individuals in high school ultimate frisbee who now form an integral part of his team. He has about half a dozen former students he now works with at Charles IT. This unique connection underscores the company's commitment to building lasting relationships.
Sal Marino's narrative at Charles IT showcases a dedication to fostering a unique workplace culture and a holistic approach to employee development. As Charles IT continues to chart its course in the MSP arena, these distinct factors will undoubtedly continue to set it apart.
Thank you Sal for sharing a bit of your story and some of the factors that make Charles IT unique with us!
