The Benefits and Drawbacks of New AI in Recruiting

Updated: Jun 13, 2023

There's a lot of buzz about new generative artificial intelligence, which backs chatbots like ChatGPT. While the new AI technology has impressed and alarmed the public, it's important to remember that it cannot fully replace human expertise. While it may have the ability to create poetry, write song lyrics, and pen movie dialogues, it lacks the creativity, empathy, and nuanced decision-making skills that are essential in many industries, including recruiting.

A tool in your tool belt

While AI has proven to be a valuable tool in the recruitment process, it's important to remember that the human element still plays a crucial role. AI can only analyze the information it's given, but human recruiters can take into account intangible factors such as cultural fit, personality, and communication skills. These are all essential considerations in finding the right candidate for the job.

That being said, AI can be incredibly helpful in the initial stages of the recruitment process. For starters, it can create job descriptions that are spot-on and catch the eye of the right candidates. Plus, it can flag qualified applicants who may have been missed in a manual search, which broadens the talent pool. Using AI can even help reduce bias and increase diversity in the hiring process, as it can generate neutral and inclusive language.

I myself am a natural wordsmith and communicator, I was afraid these marketable skills wouldn't be as necessary in the future.

However, I’ve found that one of the most useful applications of AI in the hiring process is through assisting in the creation of job descriptions. Job descriptions are crucial for attracting the right candidates and setting expectations for the role. But, writing an effective job description can be difficult, especially if you're not a natural wordsmith. That's where AI comes in. It can provide a great starting point to work from.

To use AI to create a job description, the first step is to be clear on what the position entails. You need to know the responsibilities, expectations, and qualifications required for the role. Once you have this information, you can use an AI interface like ChatGPT to help create a job description. The better the information you provide, the better the output you'll receive. This means being specific about the skills, experiences, and qualities you're looking for in a candidate. Using these details, new AI can quickly generate a job description that reflects the requirements and expectations of the role. The interface may even suggest additional details that you hadn't considered, helping to create a more comprehensive job description.

To sum it up, AI can be a valuable tool in the recruitment process, but it's important to remember that the human element is still essential. Human recruiters can provide invaluable insight into a candidate's suitability for a role, including soft skills and cultural fit, which AI may not be able to fully grasp. AI can help automate and streamline certain aspects of the recruitment process, but it should be used in conjunction with human expertise to get the best results for you and your team.
